If you plan on enabling Desktop Window Manager, make sure you have the exact required graphics card, ATI Radeon 9800 or nVidia FX 5900, more hardware is expected to be supported as we reach closer to beta 1, I almost forgot, 512MBs of memory and a desktop resolution of 1024 by 768. System requirements are still sketchy, but based on what I have seen the minimum hard disk requirement is at least 10GB’s free disk space. If you plan on doing a dual installation with an existing copy of Windows, Longhorn will create a new Boot Manager, nothing significant but noticeable. On the setup main screen of Longhorn, a link is displayed to “View Beta 1 Release notes”, which probably suggest beta 1 is not faraway in the present build series. Compared to last years WinHEC 2004 build (4074), Longhorns installation is very much similar, except for a few hints of the march towards beta 1. Search is at the heart of the OS and it’s obvious by the Start menus new fast indexing search capabilities. But it does give a promising glimpse and a blurry concept of where Microsoft is going with Windows. Longhorn WinHEC 2005 Preview build 5048 is definitively a work in progress.
